Audi Q5 2021 – The Facelift

The Legacy Returns

One look at the automobile news section and all the pages will be filled with new electric car launches. The race to an eco-friendly vehicular environment has intensified manifold over the past couple of years. Carmakers are launching new EVs ambitiously while the government continues to pledge support to this range of automobiles by providing hefty subsidies. And as the government has been issuing stricter norms on vehicle engine policies, scrapping the outdated ones so that the market has the latest Bharat Stage VI compliant engines, older cars have been seeing the exit pretty rapidly. Among these cars stands the popular Audi Q5, which had been discontinued back in April 2020 along with other cars from the Audi Q series, falling prey to these new strict emission norms.

However, the Q5 is all set to make its return towards the end of 2021, as Audi is ready to launch its new, facelifted version for the Indian markets. The new car not just houses the latest BS-VI engine, but also brings about new upgrades thus making it an attractive choice for the buyers to go for in the Audi portfolio. The Q5 facelift is expected to be launched in
November 2021, for which Audi has started accepting bookings with the amount of Rs 2 Lakhs. Audi has also begun manufacturing the SUV at their plant located at Aurangabad, Maharashtra thus ensuring that customers can drive home their facelifted Q5 at the earliest. Let’s take a look at what all changes in the car and what are the expectations buyers must behold!

Inside the Cabin

The interiors of the car are once again engineered with deep similarity to the earlier car. However, some significant changes are taken care of. At first, the customer gets a new, larger 10.1-inch touch screen display for the infotainment system as Audi bids adieu to the traditional knob to operate the display as well as the collapsible feature of the screen. This new screen is equipped with their new MMI software thus providing a simpler and easy to use UI and Audi has ensured that cutting down on the numerous buttons across the centre console find a place in this new touch screen set-up. The car also sports android auto and apple carplay, with wireless charging, park assist and many more features common to cars of this segment. Audi is offering two interior colour options at the time of launch, the cream beige one and the rich chocolaty brown one.

Audi has also brought in the fantastic
19 speaker sound system from Bang & Olufsen with 755 Watts output and 3d sound effects which amplify the experience of being inside the Q5 facelift. The luxury SUV has no shortage of space with ample legroom and headroom even in the back while the large panoramic sunroof gives an airy feel to the passengers. Yes, a few more USB charging ports could be well appreciated as now the rear passengers have access to just one 12V socket, that being said, a smart interior set-up, comfortable amount of space and a large 550-litre boot makes this SUV a highly tempting option for a buyer looking out for practicality.

Driving the New Q5

The major change that will be felt while driving the Q5 facelift will be the TDI diesel engine. Complying with the government norms on emissions from vehicles, Audi has persisted only with its 45 TFSI petrol unit which is BS-VI compliant. The 2.0-litre petrol engine produces a hefty 249 hp of power at 370 Nm of torque while being mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, this car can accelerate from 0-100 kph in 6.3 seconds! The engine is smooth, well-refined and fairly responsive however it is still at par with its competitors. The gearbox on the other hand is fairly quick to switch between gears and can give the driver a feeling of being in command when they push their foot down hard on the accelerator.

The car also consists of five different drive modes, auto, comfort, dynamic, individual and the new off-road mode for a customised driving experience. The off-road mode sets the car into lower gears while engaging the hill-descent control feature automatically and with a good amount of ground clearance makes off-road driving a convenient ordeal. Meanwhile, Audi has also added more effects to its on-road driving positions to control the amount of body roll faced by the passengers when the car is pushed in the corners. There is a little concern over the stiffness of the steering wheel however, that being said, the Q5 facelift ensures a satisfactory journey for the driver whether it is cruising over the highways in comfort or passing through rough terrain while going off-road.

Owning the Car

The Audi Q5 facelift is yet to be launched in the country however, bookings for the amount of Rs 2 lakhs are being accepted as the company fears a launch in November 2021. The car is expected to be launched in two variants, Premium plus and Technology, the latter being the top of the line variant with all the bells and whistles provided by Audi. Prices of the car are also expected to be starting from INR 60 Lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi) which continues to be a direct rival to Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3, Volvo XC60. The downside remains all these cars consist of a wider engine selection than the Q5 facelift.

Our Word

Audi, on their part, has done a good job with this facelift. But that’s the main part, The job done is good. It could be far better as the competition has actually been growing harder for the mid-range luxury SUV. Different cars in this range offer a wider engine selection choice, higher on features as well as have evolved well over the years. The Q5 does impress well with its new touch screen, and interior colours, it’s a sporty new grille and good amounts of chrome all around, however, bearing these few changes which are pretty subtle, the car remains fairly similar to the car which has already gone out thus missing the spark that one expects while looking at a facelift. However, if you’re in the market for a spacious luxury SUV that is high on practicality and brings comfort with decent driving power as well, the Audi Q5 facelift is certainly a car to check out. Do you feel Audi’s Q5 facelift returning brings a positive amount of sales for them or do other cars in the segment deserve an upper hand? Do let us know your views in the comment section below.
